THE RETT SYNDROME TEAM

Pr. Claudio De Felice

 Dr. Cinzia Signorini

 Pr. Joussef Hayek

 Dr. Silvia Leoncini

The group of Prs. De Felice and Hayek were based in Siena (Italy).

In 2010 Dr. Oger performed the synthesis of adrenic acid (AdA) metabolites called dihomo-isoprostanes. These metabolites were of great interest as adrenic acid is mainly found in white matter of the brain and could be specific biomarkers in specific pathologies were myelin degradation is involved. In 2011, the team of Pr. Claudio De Felice meet the SLB team talking about connections between adrenic acid and Rett Syndrome. From this amazing collaboration, our Rett Syndrome project team discovered the first biomarkers of Rett Syndrome in the first stage of the disease. We also have been working on finding a early biomarker of Alzheimer disease and found that dihomo-isoprostanes and neuroprostanes could be of great interest to diagnose cognitive decline prior to Alzheimer disease.

This collaboration has led to numerous studies on Rett syndrome and other neurodegenerative pathologies. Our project team has published 15 articles and one book chapter. For further information please check our publications (5, 7, 8, 10-13, 16, 57, 65, 77, 106, 108, 109 and 121).

Dr. Cinzia Signorini later joined the team of Pr. Giulia Collodel still working on the quantification of non-enzymatic oxylipins by GC/MS-MS. In this new group, Dr. Signorini has used our oxylipins to measure the role of oxylipins in sperm capacitation, or as biomarkers to measure tissue lipid peroxidation.
